There are different types of veterinary services done by this animal doctor, depending on the medical specialty and the place of practice. Old fashioned country veterinarians may have a practice that includes house calls to all the local animals within his jurisdiction. Another veterinarian might specialize in equine reproductive services, offering consulting services to horse breeders.

    Most veterinarians can be broken down into one of three categories which are large animal, small animal, and exotic. Large animal veterinarians focus primarily on farm animals such as cattle, horses, goats, sheep and swine. Small animal veterinarians care for the usual pets like cats and dogs, and some may even receive additional training for small exotics like guinea pigs and hamsters. Exotic animal veterinarians are often found in zoos and animal reserves taking care of everything from giraffes to lions.

Dental cleaning should be conducted by a professional dog caregiver. At home, pet dental health care should also be practiced. Home oral care includes routine examinations of your dog’s mouth and brushing her teeth.

    There are warning signs that will point to a pet’s poor dental health. Bad breath, red and swollen gums, a yellow-brown crust of tartar around the gum line and pain or bleeding are signs that your dog needs dental care. Some pet toys have the property of helping maintain dental health. Rope toys and rawhide chips help remove dental plaque. Be sure to choose toys that are safe to use. Do not use abrasive toys as they can wear down the teeth.
