Dogs need their nails clipped and filed on a regular basis, usually every 3 to 4 weeks. Not being attentive to overgrown dog nails can be a health issue for the pet. It can cause discomfort; but more importantly it can cause sore feet such that even the simple act of walking can be a painful experience. Cutting dog nails can be done by the owner in the home as long as he has taken the trouble to learn how to do it. But when serious nail problems occur, a visit to a pet doctor will be a necessary course of action.

Dog nail clippers are important to have in the home. Buy a quality nail clipper that is easy to clean, durable, safe and has comfortable handles. It should be the right size for the dog. Large nail clippers are used for big dogs; they also have thicker blades. There are specific kinds for medium and small dogs. Different kinds of clippers can vary in their cutting mechanism.

New dog owners realize the need to know how to groom a dog and that grooming your dog is possible if you have the correct techniques. Groomers are aware of the care their new dog’s coat is going to need and must purchase the necessary dog grooming supplies. They must then pay to learn how to groom their dog or have in done by a professional. Many dog breeds require specific and periodic grooming as well as getting bathed. If this responsibility is not going to be taken care of it’s best to not get a dog.

If your dog isn’t properly taken care of, it is very likely to get sick, smell bad, get parasites, gingivitis, etc. Besides this, it is also important to point out the fact that some breeds have developed, in some cases centuries ago, a coat and look that goes according to the place they live in. Therefore the maintenance of the dog’s coat and hair is essential in order for dogs to stay healthy. All dogs, no matter what breed, need and must be taken care of. The kind of grooming and care you will give your dog’s coat and hair will depend on the type of breed and if it has long hair, curly hair, silky hair etc , but there are some things that apply to all dogs and that is checking and cleaning its eyes, ears, teeth, nails, and anal glands.
