We recently brought home a hamster for the kids after realizing that this is one of the pets which we can have without making a mess in the house. My husband and I wanted to teach our kids the value of responsibility to them, and having a life dependent on our children will surely get them to not act too lazily and be able to look after the pet as much as they can.
The pet will be placed by the living room so everyone has direct access to it, and I would also be able to monitor if the kids are indeed looking after the creature. My husband bought the hamster one of those critter trail hamster cages so it would have enough space to move about and get some exercising done despite being locked inside a cage. Hopefully, my kids would be able to learn the values we want them to acquire over time.
