My boyfriend grew up with large dogs during his childhood: Great Danes, Greyhounds, Rottweilers and German Sheppards. So when he moved into my apartment, where I lived with my rat terrier, Trixie. It took him several weeks to adjust to the many differences between small dogs and big dogs. For example, when I asked him to feed Trixie, he would overflow her food bowl with meat scraps, rice and cornmeal in portions that would feed her days.

When he accompanied us for our first walk in the park, he was utterly confused as to why I was bringing along a pet stroller, which he actually called a baby stroller because he didn’t recognize it for what it actually was. What he needed to learn that Trixie could only keep up with me for about 12 blocks before she pooped out, and that’s when I put her in the stroller and pushed he the rest of the way.
